Matosinhos earns a salary above the national average and is in 2nd place in the AMP

Workers in half of the Portuguese municipalities earn an average salary of less than one thousand euros



In the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, earnings were higher than the country's average with the municipality of Matosinhos ranking second among all municipalities in the AMP - Metropolitan Area of Porto, with an average monthly wage of 1,338 euros.

"In 50% of Portugal's 308 municipalities [154], the average monthly earnings of full-time, fully paid employees were less than 1,000 euros in 2020," the National Statistics Institute's (INE) Regional Statistical Yearbook, published on Monday, the 19th, notes.

In the Metropolitan Area of Porto (AMP) is Invicta that leads with an average of 1,498 euros, with Matosinhos in second place with 1,388 euros and Maia in third with 1,298 euros.

In the remaining AMP, all municipalities reach the national average salary that ranges between 1000 and 1247 euros, with the exception of Paredes and Arouca, which stay at the average salary range between 900 and 1000 euros.

Across the country, the "average monthly earnings of full-time, fully paid employees was 1,247 euros," the INE reveals. As for the Lisbon and Porto Metropolitan Areas, the amounts received were above average in 2020, at €1,516 and €1,257, respectively.

"In four of the 25 NUTS III sub-regions, the average monthly gain was less than a thousand euros: Tâmega e Sousa (937 euros), Alto Tâmega (976 euros), Terras de Trás-os-Montes (988 euros) and Douro (994 euros)."
