Matosinhos develops flood prevention strategy
Within a year, the Municipality of Matosinhos will have a new instrument that will allow it to manage, in a more correct and sustainable way, the municipality's rainwater.
The first step is the characterization of the territory. This is a rigorous and exhaustive work that Indaqua Matosinhos commissioned to the Institute of Hydraulics and Water Resources of the University of Porto.
The process began in early February and involves a cadastral survey of the stormwater drainage network and the identification of critical areas of the municipality, street by street.
Since it is a buried infrastructure, the stormwater drainage network is only accessible by surveying the stormwater boxes. Among other aspects, the depth at which the pipes are installed, their diameter and material will be measured, and their state of repair will be evaluated. The survey will also identify if the effluent circulating inside the pipes is clean water (groundwater or rainwater) or if it has occasional sewage outbreaks that need to be eliminated.
The same process will be applied to the gutters that drain rainwater to the surface.
Once the characterization of the territory is complete, the next step is the preparation of the Stormwater Drainage Master Plan, an instrument that will serve to guide the implementation of integrated management strategies based on a perfect knowledge of the municipal territory and existing drainage systems.
