The figures are published in the latest report from the Water and Waste Services Regulatory Authority (ERSAR). INDAQUA Matosinhos’ Unbilled Water rate stands at 9.1%, one of the best results in the country.

The ERSAR report, containing data for 2024, indicates a national average of 26.5% for the Unbilled Water indicator, which accounts for water lost during the supply chain before it reaches consumers’ taps, due to pipe breaks, leaks or faults.
Analysing the data for the distribution companies (which ensure the supply to the population), it can be seen that Matosinhos is the fourth municipality with the lowest water losses nationally, surpassed only by Santo Tirso, Trofa and Vila do Conde.
Matosinhos achieved a loss rate of just 9.1%, similar to the previous year and representing the lowest level ever recorded in the municipality.
“It is with great enthusiasm that we see, once again, Matosinhos as a national benchmark when it comes to managing water losses in the network. Ensuring environmentally responsible management in Matosinhos is crucial for the municipality, and we see INDAQUA Matosinhos as a key partner in achieving this, in the areas of water supply and wastewater management,” says Luísa Salgueiro, Mayor of Matosinhos.
Over the last five years, according to data released by ERSAR (2024–2020), Matosinhos has consistently recorded benchmark performance at national level, with an average loss rate of just 10.8%.
“Preventing water wastage before it even reaches the consumer is not only an operational responsibility, but also an environmental one. We want to assure INDAQUA Matosinhos’ customers that their water is not only 100% safe, but is also managed as efficiently as possible,” says Tiago Fragata, Managing Director of INDAQUA Matosinhos.
