Matosinhos justifies metrobus to airport with faster connections to AMP

The Matosinhos City Hall justified the option for a 'metrobus' to the airport with faster connections to the neighboring municipalities of the Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP), as opposed to the Senhor de Matosinhos station.

"The metro station of Senhor de Matosinhos is 35 minutes from the center of Porto, 1h20 from Póvoa [de Varzim] and 52 minutes from the center of Maia. In turn, the surroundings of the airport are 27, 40 and 35 minutes away, respectively," says the Matosinhos City Hall.

Thus, it is "this comparative advantage, in addition to proximity, which justifies this preliminary study of the connection to the Metro network to the east and not the south," explains the municipality.

Matosinhos wants "a direct connection to the metro (at present) and rail network (in the future) in the vicinity of the airport.

Lusa had questioned the municipality led by Luísa Salgueiro (PS) about the 20 million euros provided by the Territorial Plan for a Just Transition (PTTJ) of Matosinhos for "clean urban transport infrastructure", which corresponds to the largest allocation of 60 million euros of the plan drawn up following the closure of the Petrogal refinery.

The 20 million euros relate to "the public transport corridor to access the area to be given by Galp for purposes of public interest (area dedicated to science and technology, boosted by the U. Porto) in order to increase the competitiveness of that industrial area affected by the closure of factories in the Petrochemical Complex.

The former Matosinhos refinery will give way to a city of innovation linked to "energies of the future", under a cooperation agreement between Galp, the Matosinhos City Council and the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N).

The municipality also confirmed that "the investment" of 20 million euros "will have to be enough", when asked if there would be more funds for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT - aka 'metrobus').

"The priorities for Matosinhos in the metropolitan area are the BRT lines to the Airport and Boavista and the metro to the University Center via São Mamede de Infesta. There are no technical and financial conditions to insert other priorities that seek to minimize inter-municipal travel", says the reply.

The goal of the Matosinhos City Hall is to "execute until 2026" the connection to the airport. It is also under consideration the connection to Leça da Palmeira and Matosinhos.

The municipality also said that "Metro do Porto is working on the expansion of the metropolitan network, articulating with the existing network in Maia, Gondomar, Gaia, Vila do Conde and Póvoa", and that the goal of the 'metrobus' is "to make the connection to the existing network".

On June 22, the Matosinhos City Council confirmed to Lusa that it had commissioned a study to implement a 'metrobus' between the airport and Petrogal, with the connection to Leça da Palmeira and Matosinhos still being considered.

"It covers the connection of the airport [Francisco Sá Carneiro] to the eastern area of the Petrogal land, but is also under analysis the route of the connection to Leça da Palmeira and Matosinhos," said the municipality, in response to questions from the Lusa agency.

At stake is a study commissioned to the company Trenmo for the "exploratory analysis for the feasibility of implementing a BRT [Bus Rapid Transit, commonly known as 'metrobus'] in Matosinhos", signed in February this year, published in the public procurement portal Base.
