Matosinhos will spend 50% less energy on Christmas lights

The Matosinhos City Hall announced a 50% energy saving in Christmas lighting this year. The focus on LED technology, the reduction of structures and the reduction of the period in which the lights are on (from 6pm to midnight) guarantee this goal

"While maintaining the lighting on the main commercial arteries of the municipality, the local authority has opted for 100% LED lighting with high efficiency and very low energy consumption. In addition, the number of structures with lighting will be reduced by 25%, compared to 2021, and electronic devices that allow energy savings will be used. The Municipality of Matosinhos will also follow the Government's recommendation, only switching on the Christmas lights between 6pm and midnight," explains the Câmara, in a statement. The illuminations will be on the streets during the same period as the previous year, that is, between November 25 and January 8.

"Energy saving has been a concern of this council for some years now and we have taken measures to reduce our energy footprint, such as replacing 90% of public lighting with LEDs. This year, the issue of reducing energy consumption is more pressing given the international situation and so we have adopted extraordinary measures," said Marta Pontes, councillor for Tourism and Economic Activities, quoted in a municipal statement.
