Mercadona joins Docapesca's "Proof of Purchase at the Quay" initiative

The company joins the initiative promoted by Docapesca, whose goal is to contribute to the enhancement of the Portuguese fishing sector. Mercadona is thus reinforcing its commitment to national production, having bought more than 1,600 tonnes of fish at Portuguese fish auctions in 2021, the equivalent of €4.5 million

Mercadona has joined the "Proof of Purchase at the Quota" initiative promoted by Docapesca, thus strengthening its commitment to buying Portuguese products. The aim of this initiative, created in 2010, is to contribute to adding value to Portuguese fish, to fairer payment for fishermen and, at the same time, to promote healthy eating using fresh, local products.

Mercadona currently buys from 9 fish auctions from the north to the south of Portugal, seeking to ensure that fresh, quality-assured fish reaches its shops every day. In 2021, the company bought more than 1,600 tonnes of fish at national fish auctions, representing 4.5 million euros.

With this membership, Mercadona will also identify its shops on the "Lota em Casa" website, a platform created by Docapesca, which allows end consumers to find the locations where fresh fish is sold from Portuguese fish auctions in each region.

What is the CCL fish - Proof of Purchase at Quota?

It is a product that is controlled from its origin, bringing benefits not only to the consumer but also to the environment.

Most of this fish is caught by national boats operating off the Portuguese coast, which means that less energy is consumed during its capture and land transport, resulting in lower emissions for the environment.

On the other hand, the fish at the fish auction is a product caught with the future in mind, which adopts the traceability rules required by law. It also respects the seasonality of each species and the established fishing quotas, preserving fish stocks.

The CCL also makes it possible to identify the capture zone and the fishing gear used to capture the fish. This way, the consumer has the necessary information to make a conscious and responsible purchase.
