Porto's "metrobus" will keep a cycle track on the western section of Avenida da Boavista, from the Garcia de Orta high school to Castelo do Queijo, announced last week, March 29, the Metro architect responsible for the project
Joana Barros presented, at the Catholic University, "the definition of what will be the bike path that will be formalized as it exists today, but alongside the "metrobus" channel, and that will maintain the connection to the existing bike path next to [the high school] Garcia de Orta".
Quoted by Lusa news agency, the architect in charge explained that the bike path will allow "the connection in two points to the City Park, and will also connect to the Matosinhos waterfront and the Porto waterfront".
The bicycle path "will not coincide with the "metrobus" channel, it will be parallel and completely independent, and segregated", added Joana Barros.
"The independence of these three flows - road, "metrobus" and bike path - is guaranteed, it is not a shared path", she guaranteed, although, at another point of discussion, the communications director of Metro do Porto, Jorge Afonso Morgado, has referred to a possible coexistence.
Regarding the lack of a dedicated lane in Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa, Jorge Afonso Morgado said that Metro do Porto proposes "a scalable solution, and that what is a shared channel will be a matter of time until it becomes an exclusive channel for the "metrobus"".
The "metrobus" is a hydrogen bus service that will circulate in a dedicated channel in Avenida da Boavista and together with the rest of the traffic in Marechal Gomes da Costa. The project will cost 66 million euros, fully financed in non-repayable funds by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
The new means of transport will have services similar to those of Metro do Porto between Casa da Música and Praça do Império, as well as between Casa da Música and Anémona (Praça Cidade do Salvador, in Matosinhos), with the works of the first section having already started at the end of January.
