The investment aims to increase container handling capacity and promote environmental sustainability, with an investment of over 400 thousand euros.
The Administration of Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, S. A. (APDL) has started the first phase of modernising the Leixões Rail Freight Terminal (TFML).
The initial phase, a candidate for the PACS - Programme for Climate Action and Sustainability, aims to implement a series of significant improvements to the infrastructure.
With an investment of more than 400,000 euros, the intervention covers an area of around 2,000 m², including the paving of new car parking areas, resulting in an increase in container handling capacity of around 15,000 TEUs, reaching approximately 95,000 TEUs/year. The remodelling of the terminal's entrance area, improvements to the rainwater drainage network and the implementation of a new telecommunications and lighting infrastructure will ensure greater safety and operational efficiency. This infrastructure will enable better integration with the Port of Leixões network, boosting connectivity and logistical efficiency.
The next phase of the project, with an investment of more than 5 million euros, aims to double the terminal's current capacity to around 156,000 TEUs, rearrange the terminal space, improve the pavement and correct the layout of the railway tracks to allow the reception of trains up to 750 metres long. The creation of a roundabout next to the TFML will make it possible to segregate road access for the 400 or so lorries a day from urban traffic, improving traffic flow and safety.
This modernisation project represents a strategic investment for APDL, reinforcing the logistics capacity of the Port of Leixões and promoting greater sustainability and efficiency in port operations, while contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions and the future adoption of electric equipment for vertical handling.
