More than 43,500 road accidents and almost 160 deaths between January and April

PSP and GNR registered 43,602 road accidents which caused almost 160 deaths



Figures indicate an increase compared to the same period in 2022.

In the presentation of the operational results for the months of January to April this year, the National Republican Guard and the Public Security Police also advanced that 766 people suffered serious injuries.

Between January and April, the GNR registered 25,784 accidents that caused 128 fatalities, 533 serious injuries and 7,298 light injuries.

Compared to the same period in 2022, that corporation recorded 2,921 more accidents, 13 more deaths, 10 more seriously injured and 864 more slightly injured.

In the first four months of the year, the PSP recorded 17,818 accidents, 31 deaths and 233 injured, meaning an increase of 8% in accidents compared to the same period in 2022 and 55% in fatalities (11 more).

At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) in Lisbon, the Minister of Internal Administration called for "responsible behaviours", stressing that the main causes of accidents are speeding, alcohol and mobile phone use behind the wheel.

"It is important that everyone has the appropriate behaviours to face this scourge of the country," said José Luís Carneiro.
