This Monday, March 27, marks the National Blood Donor Day
Given the date, and the reduction in blood donations seen over recent times, the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) of Porto appealed to the donation of blood and platelets, especially among the younger population.
According to the director of the institute's Immunohemotherapy service, Luísa Lopes dos Santos, there is currently no shortage of blood. However, there is a significant drop. "No treatment has ever been in question, but we have to anticipate it so that everything goes well," she told Agência Lusa, as reported by Rádio Nova.
Those interested can donate blood and platelets from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Last year, the IPO registered 15.4% less donations than in 2021, which corresponds to only 8,427 blood donations. The trend has been downward, nationally, which is why the institute reinforces this appeal, in order to ensure "a more frequent donation throughout the year.
Citizens who donate this Monday at the Immunohemotherapy service of the Porto IPO will enjoy a "musical moment" and will also receive a "small symbolic gift".
