Centenary canning company in Matosinhos launches a special edition of artisanal canned sardines

As a result of its historical relationship with the sea and as a tribute to fishermen, an iconic image of its cans of preserves, Pinhais, a century-old cannery from Matosinhos, launches a special edition of artisanal canned sardines, in olive oil, to mark the National Fisherman's Day. The illustration is by the graphic designer Marcos Porto, who materializes the idea through the lithograph of a limited edition of 200 cans, on sale at the Vivo Museum “Conservas Pinhais Factory Tour” and the Pinhais online store, for a unit price of €5.40 .
The illustration of this themed tin depicts nautical elements, in an exaltation of the origin and nature of the brand, with a strong connection to the sea and to those who work in it. In fact, this tribute recovers one of the identity elements of the Pinhais brand and all its symbology, which has always been present in the products that reach the whole world. The illustration is signed by Marcos Porto, a graphic designer who, during the pandemic context, spent three months working as a fisherman in the Nazaré area, a personal enrichment project, which also served as an inspiration for this work.
Patrícia Sousa, marketing director at Pinhais, underlines “The launch of this special edition aims to celebrate fishermen and their decisive role in the canning industry, as heroes at sea who daily bring the best fish to auctions. The choice of sardines in olive oil is related to the choice of a preserve that enhances the flavor of the sardines, which, along with the image of the fisherman, are true symbols of our cans, our brand, the fishing community of Matosinhense.”
The official adds that “This is a limited edition of 200 cans, totally exclusive to our consumers, available in our Living Museum, as well as in our online store. By betting on special editions, we intend to maintain this path we have followed, that of never forgetting those who make our art possible.”
It should be noted that Pinhais is the only canning factory in the country that maintains the traditional method throughout its production. The artisanal process comprises several fundamental steps, 37 in total, which gives authenticity to the preserves. From the intensification of the flavors in brine, to the manual cutting and preparation of all the fresh ingredients supplied locally, to the selection of only the best fish from the Atlantic coast, a process that ends with the canning that is fundamental for the conservation of the fish.
