The cold wave that, during this week, has been felt throughout the districts of mainland Portugal led the Municipality of Porto to activate a reinforcement of its street teams in support of people experiencing homelessness. The measure comes into force from 21:00 this Wednesday
"Although the criteria established by the Contingency Plan for People Experiencing Homelessness of NPISA Porto - Cold Wave 2023, which is only activated with minimum temperatures below 3ºC, for three consecutive days - the City Hall of Porto is moving forward, as of today, with a reinforcement of street teams, which daily accompany people experiencing homelessness", reported in a statement.
Through this action, it is intended to ensure an "intensive monitoring of people in a more vulnerable situation, given the lower temperatures. Warm clothing, blankets, comfort food and hot drinks are some of the items that will be distributed by the two multidisciplinary teams that will be on the ground.
The eight elements of the teams, from the Municipal Civil Protection, Fire Brigade Regiment, Municipal Department of Social Cohesion and Street Teams, will also proceed to the "signaling and routing to the NPISA - Núcleo de Planeamento e Intervenção Sem-Abrigo do Porto (Porto's Homeless Planning and Intervention Center) of people who show intention to join the social shelter responses," reads the City Hall news portal.
Additionally, Porto. indicates that it will continue to have in operation the solidarity restaurants of the municipal network - Joaquim Urbano Temporary Hosting Center, Downtown (Travessa de Passos Manuel) and Batalha. In total, the three spaces ensure the delivery of more than 550 meals daily.
