Portugal extends contingency situation

The contingency situation in mainland Portugal, due to the occurrence of fires, will last until next Sunday, July 17, instead of ending this Friday, the 15th, as initially planned.

The information was confirmed by the Prime Minister, António Costa, after a meeting with the president of the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), Miguel Miranda, and those responsible for the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority.

“The temperature will drop in the coming days, but we have an accumulation of fires in the last few days”, said the head of the Government, indicating that although “ignitions have a tendency to decrease, there is a legacy that passes from day to day”.

Added to this factor is the “increasing wear and tear of forces on the ground”, he added.

It is recalled that, taking into account the various active fires, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) issued a statement with a set of recommendations aimed at alerting citizens to the importance of protecting themselves from exposure to fire smoke.
