Nurse Teresa Fraga is a finalist for the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2023, which aims to recognise community service provided by nurses around the world
Teresa Fraga, nurse and director of Kastelo - Continuing and Palliative Care Unit for children, was nominated for the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2023.
The international recognition of Teresa Fraga's work comes in the context of her community intervention. Kastelo was founded in 2016 with support from the European Union, with the aim of bridging the large gap in the monitoring of children with chronic pathology.
Located in São Mamede de Infesta, Matosinhos, Kastelo invests all its efforts in the quality of life of these children, providing them with opportunities for cognitive development, and making children's palliative care a community effort. "Kastelo is a pioneering project in Portugal, whose main purpose is to reduce the time children spend in hospital and provide access to physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, a teacher, an educator, paediatricians and specialist nurses. Our philosophy is to bring life to the days of these children and their families," she declares.
The Portuguese nurse is part of the group of 10 finalists resulting from 51,000 entries from countries all over the world. In addition to Portugal, in Top 10 of nominees for the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2023, the Philippines, India, England, Ireland, Panama, Kenya, Singapore, Tanzania and the United Arab Emirates are also represented.
The finalists, whose stories "deserve global prominence in empowering communities and enriching the nursing profession" according to Aster DM Healthcare, will participate in a debate with an independent panel of healthcare experts. After a public vote, the winner will be announced on 12 May, International Nursing Day, at the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2023 ceremony in London, and awarded with USD 250,000.00, to be applied to the institution in which the winner works.
