A cycle path will be built on the avenue, but the changes are much more profound. Find out here where it begins, how long it will take, and the details of this €3 million project.

The redevelopment of Avenida D. Afonso Henriques will begin on Monday, 2 February, with work between Matosinhos Town Hall and the ring road.
The work will start between Circunvalação and Fonte Luminosa and will be carried out in phases in order to reduce disruption.
According to the local authority, this intervention will begin with the drainage and water supply infrastructure in order to solve problems such as water accumulation on rainy days and pavement degradation.
The work includes the renovation of the wastewater and rainwater networks, the detection and correction of improper connections, the improvement of drainage and pavements on roads and pavements and, where necessary, the correction of the water supply network, preventing losses and breakdowns.
The avenue will also gain a cycle path, with a redesign of the roads, improving mobility and pedestrian circulation.
Taking advantage of this structural intervention, the avenue will also be redesigned and upgraded, making it more functional, more comfortable and with better mobility conditions, including pedestrian and cycle traffic.
The investment is €3 million, and the expected completion time is 18 months.
The local authority also states that ‘During the works, access to homes, shops and services will be ensured, with temporary restrictions, which will be clearly signposted and communicated.’
