Santiago Maritime Way

Vessels, moored in Matosinhos, continue their journey

About 20 vessels, national and international, have already left Matosinhos, heading to Viana do Castelo, participating in the first inaugural cruise of the Maritime Way to Santiago.

This is a new project by UPSTREAM Portugal and Fórum Oceano, within the scope of the National Network of Nautical Stations in Portugal. The objective is to reinforce the international visibility of the Portuguese itineraries of the Caminhos de Santiago and, at the same time, to strengthen the synergy between the land and sea routes.

The first “Camino Marítimo de Santiago” intends to recreate part of the journey of the “Stone Boat” that, according to legend, in the first millennium, transported the body of the Holy Pilgrim from Palestine to Galicia.

The Nautical Way will take place over a total of 17 days and consists of nine stages, starting in Vila Real de Santo António, and stopping at the ports of Vilamoura, Lagos, Sines, Cascais, Peniche/Nazaré, Ria de Aveiro, Matosinhos and Viana. of the Castle. The route continues towards Baiona, ending at the port of Vila Garcia de Arousa, in Galicia (Spain), from where passengers will have to complete the route on foot to Santiago de Compostela.

The vessels were moored at the Port of Leixões from the 6th to the 8th of June, including the Caravela Vera Cruz. Built in 2000, as part of the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Discovery of Brazil, Caravela Vera Cruz is an exact replica of the old Portuguese caravels. Yesterday, on the municipal holiday, visits to the vessel were allowed.

This morning, the departure of the vessels was witnessed by the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, and by the Councilor for Sports, Vasco Pinho.

The expected date of completion of this trip is the 13th of June and is part of the celebration of Jacobeo 2021-2022.
