More specifically, five of the 18 carriages ordered from the Chinese company CRRC
It was in October 2022 that the first Chinese train made for the Oporto subway was on its way to Portugal. And the first train did indeed arrive at the repair workshops in Guifões, where it was coupled and where it received finishing touches so that it could enter service.
There is now news about these Chinese coaches. This Saturday, during a visit to the new model, which is on display at Trindade Station, so that everyone can have a glimpse of the future carriages, the president of Metro do Porto, Tiago Braga, told journalists that the new carriages should enter in circulation in May.
Yes, carriages, because although only one has arrived yet, four more should arrive at the Guifões workshop by the end of March. All told, five of the 18 carriages ordered from the Chinese company CRRC, the world's largest rail vehicle manufacturer, will soon enter service.
Five more cars are expected to arrive in July, and the remaining cars will be delivered to Metro do Porto in September. The goal is that, by the end of the year, all the carriages ordered will be circulating and serving passengers.
These Chinese cars will arrive in time for the conclusion of the expansion works of the Yellow Line, from Santo Ovídio to Vila d'Este. Thanks to the new trains, the new communication system and the expansion works, the Yellow Line will have more trains per hour and per direction, something that will be felt especially during peak hours.
For example, sometime this year, the frequency will increase from 10 to 12 vehicles/hour/ direction. From 2024, it will be 16 vehicles/hour/ direction. And that year, until December 31st, it is expected that the works for the construction of the Pink Line will be finished, which will make the first circular line of Metro do Porto a reality. In this case, there will be trains every three minutes during rush hour, which means 18 vehicles/hour/sense.
These vehicles ordered to CRRC have capacity for 346 people and travel at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
