Sustainable Fishing Practices

Matosinhos Market receives initiative of the "Month of the Companies"


The Conference "Sustainable Fishing Practices", organized by COLAB B2E - Laboratory for the Blue Bioeconomy in partnership with the Municipality of Matosinhos, took place yesterday at the Municipal Market of Matosinhos.

Inserted in the "Month of the Companies - Be Matosinhos", the initiative addressed the theme of sustainability in the fishing sector, through the sharing of some of the best practices of Sustainable Fisheries that are already a reality today, the challenges associated with it and the role of scientific and technological innovation in responding to these challenges.

Michael Weber, from the Littoral Station of Aguda started the lectures, presenting the project of the Portinho da Praia da Aguda and its relation with the future of the local artisanal fisheries. The role of Scientific and Technological Innovation in responding to the challenges posed by Sustainable Fisheries was the topic addressed by Luísa Barros, +Atlântico CoLAB. Sérgio Faias, spoke about the role of Docapesca as a support network for an increasingly sustainable sector. The NetTAG project, resulting from a partnership between fishermen and researchers that aims to prevent and reduce marine litter, was presented by Marisa Almeida, from CIIMAR.

Certification was the theme of the final lecture, led by Rodrigo Sengo, from MSC-Marine Stewardship Council, who presented the MSC certification program and also addressed the commitments to certified sustainable fishing in Portugal.

The conference was closed with a round table discussion led by Elisabete Matos, Scientific-Technical Coordinator of B2E, and that brought together all the speakers in answering questions related to the various topics addressed, before an interested audience.

On September 26, the Municipal Market will host the second lecture organized by CoLAB, dedicated to Science and the Blue Bioeconomy, with the presentation of case studies of companies and institutions linked to research.

Remember that the Matosinhos City Hall is organizing, until October 14, the "Companies Month", an initiative that aims to publicize and boost the economic and business sectors of the municipality. More than 20 activities, which will involve more than 8 thousand participants and major events such as the Hapiness Camp, in partnership with Lionesa, or the national congresses with AEP and the Portuguese Logistics Association.
