The Government provides 7.4 million euros for new Metro lines in Matosinhos, Maia, Gondomar and Trofa

The money will be used to carry out studies and planning for the new lines, which will be completed by 2030. In Matosinhos, the São Mamede Line will connect the IPO to the Estádio do Mar over 6 kilometres.

The Ministry of the Environment and Energy (MAEn) announced this Wednesday that it is channelling almost 7.4 million euros to Metro do Porto for the development and planning of new metro lines in the municipalities of Matosinhos, Porto, Maia, Gondomar and Trofa.

Maria da Graça Carvalho, Minister for the Environment and Energy, said in a press release that the aim is to "promote quality public transport" as an "essential element of decarbonisation efforts".

In conjunction with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing (MIH), the sum totals 7.36 million euros. Around 4.8 million euros come from the Environmental Fund, allocated in 2025. The remaining 2.56 million euros will be allocated this year.

The money will be used to finance environmental impact studies, topographical and heritage surveys. The study covers 37 kilometres of all the lines, from which 38 new stations will be built on the Metro do Porto.

In Matosinhos, the São Mamede de Infesta Line will connect the IPO and Estádio do Mar over around 6.6 kilometres and eight stations (Senhora da Hora II, S. Gens, Xanana Gusmão, Elaine Sanceau, Pedra Verde, S. Mamede, ISCAP, IPO II).

The Maia II Line will connect Roberto Frias and the Airport (14.3 km); the Trofa Line will run between ISMAI and Muro (3.2 km); the Gondomar Line will connect the Estádio do Dragão and Souto (6.9 km).

The Minister also said that "promoting quality public transport is an essential element of the efforts to decarbonise our economy, since the transport sector is precisely one of those whose national indicators in the European context require permanent commitment. We need to provide citizens with real alternatives to the use of the car, which are currently clearly insufficient," she said.
