Warning to the Population

Increased precipitation and wind forecast for the early afternoon of November 15 to the early morning of November 16

The Civil Protection of Matosinhos warns the population, according to IPMA forecasts, for a worsening of precipitation and wind, with a yellow weather warning for persistent precipitation and sometimes strong and strong wind with gusts of the order of 70 to 80 km / h on the coastal strip, the early afternoon of November 15 until the early morning of November 16.

Depending on the forecast weather conditions is expected:

- Slippery road surface due to possible formation of water tables;

- Possible flooding in urban areas due to the accumulation of rainwater or shortcomings of drainage systems;

- Possible flooding of underground structures with drainage deficiencies;

- Possibility of rapid or progressive flooding due to overflowing water lines in historically more vulnerable areas;

- Possibility of flooding in buildings installed at lower elevations or on uneven ground, with particular incidence in places where there is surface runoff of rainwater;

- Drainage difficulties in urban systems, namely those that occur during high tide periods, which may cause flooding in historically more vulnerable locations;

- Damage to assembled or suspended structures (scaffolding, billboards, among others);

- Possibility of falling branches or trees, as well as affecting infrastructures associated with communication and energy networks;

- Cuts or breaks in the power supply or communication systems;

- Stabilisation of slopes associated with soil saturation, causing earth movement. We also take this opportunity to reinforce precautionary measures to be taken by the population:

- Ensure the unblocking of the rainwater drainage systems and the removal of aggregates and other objects that may be dragged or create obstacles to the free flow of water;

- Adopt a more defensive driving style, reducing speed;

- Do not cross flooded areas, so as to avoid people or vehicles being dragged into holes in the pavement or open sewage drains;

- Be particularly careful when driving and when standing close to wooded areas, being alert for the possibility of branches or trees falling when there is a strong wind;

- Be particularly careful when fixing temporary structures;

- Be particularly careful when moving close to the coast in vulnerable areas;

- If you are faced with any situation of imminent danger, contact 112 or the Matosinhos Shared Central Office through the single emergency number 220178402;

- Be attentive to information from the weather, Civil Protection and Security Forces.
