World Breastfeeding Week

Matosinhos Local Health Unit promotes awareness campaign with the support of the municipality

Breast milk is a superfood. It adapts exactly to the nutritional needs of the baby at the different stages of growth and prevents diseases such as infections, obesity and diabetes, among others.

For the mother, breastfeeding is equally beneficial. In addition to quickly regaining her usual weight, there is less risk of breast and ovarian cancer and osteoporosis.

From 3 to 7 October, the World Breastfeeding Week takes place. Under the slogan "Defend Breastfeeding: educate and support", the Breastfeeding Promotion Committee of the Matosinhos Local Health Unit is promoting an awareness campaign to encourage and support breastfeeding.

Throughout this week, images of new mothers breastfeeding their babies are being shared on several billboards across the municipality, provided by the Matosinhos City Hall.

They will draw attention to the importance of promoting and defending breastfeeding, through a campaign that relied on the voluntary and enthusiastic participation of new mothers who volunteered to share images of happy moments breastfeeding their babies.

The Pedro Hispano Hospital, it should be remembered, has been considered a "Baby-Friendly Hospital" since 2011, a title that has already been renewed and which guarantees that it continues to implement the ten measures defined by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF to promote and encourage breastfeeding. The next step is to obtain the same title for the Health Centre Clusters - ACES of Matosinhos.
