WYD organizer in Madrid says he doesn't understand spending in Portugal

The organizer of the World Youth Day in Madrid says he doesn't understand the expenses in Portugal for the event that takes place in August

WYD was held in Madrid in 2011, and the total value was 52.8 million euros, making it one of the cheapest in recent years.

Therefore, the executive director of WYD in Madrid criticized the budget of 160 million euros that are planned for WYD in Portugal.

To RTP, Yago de la Cierva reiterated that it is hard for him to understand where all this money will actually be spent. "I've been involved in nine World Youth Days. If the Lisbon World Youth Day has a budget of 160 million, it is much higher than all the others," he told the television channel.

The organizer also recalled that at the time the event was held in Madrid, the country was in an economic crisis and so the event was held with the use of many volunteers. "We couldn't ask the state for money, it seemed distasteful," he reiterated.

The World Youth Day will take place in Lisbon between August 1st and 6th.

According to estimates made by the Government, the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures, and the Catholic Church, the event will cost at least 155 million euros.
