Porto Football Association surpasses 40 thousand members for the first time

For the first time in history, the Oporto Football Association surpassed the mark of 40 thousand registered athletes, a record that has never before been reached by another District and Regional Football Association at a national level. There are currently 40,129 athletes registered in the AF Porto

The evolution in the number of athletes has been constant, with the exception of the year 2020/2021, all of which was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and which mainly affected the training levels. The 2020/2021 season is, therefore, the reference period for the analysis.

At the time when competitions were interrupted, on 6 March 2020 (2019/2020 season), the Associação de Futebol do Porto registered 32,940 athletes, a number that, as already mentioned, dropped to 24,822 affiliated athletes.

After the pandemic, and with the outbreak under control, the 2021/2022 season registered a progressive return to normality. And in this season of "recovery", the Oporto Football Association managed to reach a mark it had never reached before. It ended the sporting year with 35,955 registered athletes, distributed by a record number of clubs: 302 in total.

In that same year, the number of football athletes reached 30,161, while futsal players were 5,404.

It was already in the current season that the historic barrier of 40,000 athletes was surpassed, a number that was a goal and an ambition outlined for this mandate of the current direction of the Football Association of Porto.

"This number reflects all the work that was done by the Football Association of Porto during the pandemic season being, whenever possible, by the side of its affiliates. Then, it also reflects the remarkable work that the affiliated clubs and the entire universe of our football and futsal made to overcome the greatest adversities. A number like this can only be achieved with the Association, clubs, municipalities and other entities that accompany us rowing in the same direction", said José Neves, president of the Football Association of Porto.
