Portugal placed in First Place

The group stage of the World Cup in Qatar ends today

The two Portuguese-speaking countries - Portugal and Brazil - have qualified for the knockout stages, which start this weekend and run until Tuesday.

The biggest surprises in this first round of the competition were the eliminations of Belgium, third-placed in 2018 in Russia, and Germany, a nation that won the world title four times.

Portugal were through after the second round in Group H, something that had only happened in 2006 in Germany. Portugal beat Ghana 3-2 and Uruguay 2-0. It has now suffered its first defeat in the World Cup2022, against South Korea 2-1, in the 3rd round of the group stage.

Despite this result, the team secured first place in the group with six points earned.

In the round of 16, Portugal will play against the second placed team in Group G, which should be Cameroon, Serbia or Switzerland.
