Portugal to host Council of Europe Sports Ministers Conference in 2024

Government proposes some debates such as 'protection and safeguarding of children and young people in sport', 'gender equality in sport



The cities of Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and Matosinhos will host the 18th conference of Sports Ministers of the Council of Europe, which, in 2024, will be held for the first time in Portugal, the government announced this Wednesday, October 26.

In a statement, the office of the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport reported the victory of the Government's application to organize the conference in the region of the intermunicipal association Atlantic Front, during the 17th ministerial meeting, taking place in Antalya, Turkey.

"For the 18th conference of Sports Ministers of the Council of Europe - which will include in its program other conferences and debates before and after the main conference - the Portuguese Government proposes debates on the 'protection and safeguarding of children and youth in sport', the 'gender equality in sport' and the 'sports diplomacy', themes that have been a priority in the guidance and action for this governmental area," detailed the tutelage.

Portugal is represented at the 17th conference by the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Correia, representing the Minister of State and Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, who oversees the sector.

Regarding the next meeting, the office of the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport believes that holding the conference in Portugal "contributes to the international affirmation of Portuguese sport, in line with the Government's program.

The Council of Europe's conferences of Sports Ministers are held every two years, bringing together the governments of the 46 European countries which are part of the Council of Europe, as well as Canada, Israel and Morocco.

"In the year of the Olympic Games and Paralympics in Paris, the 18th conference of sports ministers of the Council of Europe will allow us to write a historic page in national, European and international sports," predicts the Portuguese government.
