Being a competition that follows the age standards of the World Surf League, after a few years of interregnum where internationally the competition was dedicated to surfers up to 18 years old, the Junior Tour returned to the Portuguese beaches in 2022 with Martim Nunes and Érica Máximo becoming national champions, thus succeeding some names that currently lead the Portuguese surfing as Frederico Morais, Vasco Ribeiro, Tomás Fernandes, Francisco Alves, Teresa Bonvalot or Carolina Mendes.

Martim Nunes - National Champion Projunior 2022

"It was very good to achieve this title in my career because I had never won it before. I saw my effort rewarded. I was able to show my surfing in the two stages of the circuit and it was important for the following competitions of the MEO Surf League and in the European Projunior. For this stage in Porto I'm going to focus on my surfing and I want to compete well, but I'm not thinking about the result or the title. I want to control what I can and show good surfing." Erica Máximo - National Champion Projunior 2022

"It was very important to win the Projunior national champion title. I had never been national champion before and that was a huge confidence boost for the championships that followed. It proved that we are capable of beating athletes who are sometimes better or more recognised. I felt that since then there has been more recognition from people in relation to my surfing and that makes me happy. Now I'm going to Porto to surf good waves and defend my title.

The Projunior Porto & Matosinhos will be co-organized by Onda Pura with the Associação Nacional de Surfistas and is part of the list of events that make up the Porto and Matosinhos Wave Series 2023.

Marcelo Martins - Wave Series Organization and Projunior Porto & Matosinhos

"It is always great to host this Junior Tour event, which brings to the waves of the North the best under-20 athletes from all over the country. Besides being an important qualifying event in this category, it is an incentive for the younger athletes to continue to excel and to continue their training and preparation work in this sport, to continuously improve their level. It is also an important motivating factor for the coaches and for the teams, who can show their work and the evolution of their athletes."
