The Football Association (AF) of Porto registers a record number of female athletes in the current season (2022/2023), counting 2173 players to date

"A number that reflects the declared focus on women's football and futsal by the Board of the AF Porto and above all the result of the work of the affiliated clubs. This is because the current number of female teams in the district has never been so high. There are currently 127 between football and futsal", specifies the direction of AF Porto.
Specifically, in the 2020/2021 season, 1061 players were affiliated to the Porto Football Association. A number that rose to 1750 in the following season, and that went up again in the current season, to reach 2173. Taking homologous periods as a basis for comparison, the growth in the number of athletes between 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 was 24.17%.
With regard to age groups, the seniors continue to be the largest group in absolute terms of federated athletes in the two sports, representing 670 of the 2173, but it is in the training groups that there is a greater increase in the number of athletes registered compared to the previous year.
Of note here are the Under-11 (223/+54.9%), Under-13 (294/+63.3), Under-15 (324/+36.1%) and Under-17 (306/+15.5%) athletes. A number that can be explained by the reformulation and creation of new training football competitions in the AF Porto.
It was precisely in football that the number of athletes grew most, having almost tripled between the 2020/2021 and 2022/23 seasons. There were 649 registered to play football in the AF Porto at the beginning of the decade, a number that currently stands at 1522. Compared to last season (1141), this represents an increase of 33.39%.
In futsal, the trend, although more tenuous, is also upwards. In the pavilions of the district, there were 412 affiliated players in the 2020/2021 season, a number that rose considerably in the following season (609). In 2022/23 there are 651 athletes who play futsal in the AF Porto, representing a 7% increase over the same period last year.
Regarding the number of female teams, including football and futsal, there are today 127 registered in the AF Porto, compared to 114 in the previous season. The great growth of teams in the district championships of women's football should be highlighted in this number. If in 2021/2022 24 teams competed, today there are 39 formations that give life to our football competitions.
