Matosinhos renewed all the Blue Flags awarded, in the last year, to 13 beaches in the municipality. The quality of the water, to which the effective sanitation management carried out by INDAQUA Matosinhos contributes, is one of the factors that contribute to the distinction. More connection to the network, deactivation of septic tanks and investment in the expansion and maintenance of ducts are among the improvements achieved by the company since 2008
The Blue Flag has long become a symbol of quality and safety for bathers, as well as a factor to consider when choosing a beach. In Matosinhos, there are 13 places where the award will be hoisted again this year (Agudela, Angeiras Norte, Angeiras Sul, Aterro, Cabo do Mundo, Funtão, Fuzelhas, Leça da Palmeira, Marreco, Memória, Pedras Brancas, Pedras do Corgo and Quebrada ), once again positioning the municipality as the third in the country with the most Blue Flags.
One of the criteria necessary for the award of the Flag is water quality, which depends, among others, on the correct management of sanitation, ensured in this municipality by INDAQUA Matosinhos. According to the parameters of the Blue Flag Association of Europe, “a guarantee must be given that any industrial or urban waste water discharges on the beach do not affect its quality” and that “the community in which the beach is integrated must comply with regulations and legislation relating to wastewater treatment”.
Together, INDAQUA Matosinhos and the Municipality of Matosinhos have made several investments to give the people of Matosinhos these guarantees, ensuring the correct routing and treatment of wastewater for domestic and industrial use, so that it is returned to the environment without negative consequences. The expansion of networks, the deactivation of thousands of septic tanks and the increase in connections to the public sanitation network translate into clean water lines and beaches that have been consecutively awarded.
This year, 431 beaches in Portugal have been awarded the Blue Flag, 32 more than in 2021, after evaluating indicators such as environmental information and education, good environmental management and equipment, safety and services. Vila do Conde and Santa Maria da Feira, two municipalities where INDAQUA is also responsible for waste water management, also renewed their Blue Flags. Santa Maria da Feira maintains the flag at Praia Fluvial da Mâmoa and, in Vila do Conde, it will be hoisted again on six beaches.
